summer

You may be ready for summer with its backyard barbeques, pool days and vacations. But is your home prepared to handle the heat? Hot and humid days have already started for us and are sure to get hotter from here. Here are five things that you can do to get your home ready for another North Carolina summer.

1. Preventative Maintenance check: It always seems like your A/C decides to breakdown on the hottest day of the year or when company is coming to visit. Preventative maintenance checks can help reduce the occurrence of untimely breakdowns.  Your cooling system works hard in the summer so it is important to have it inspected by a professional to ensure it is functioning as it should. A properly functioning air conditioner or heat pump is more energy efficient and can save you money on your utility bill.

2. Replace filters: It is very important to replace your air filters regularly. We recommend replacing them every 30 days. Dirty filters restrict the air flow to your evaporator coil which can cause the system to freeze up and not function. Over time this can cause a lot of damage to your unit. Fresh air filters help your AC run more efficiently.

3. Change the direction of your ceiling fan: Switch the spin direction on your ceiling fan to counter clockwise. The circulation of air can make a room feel more comfortable even at higher temperatures.

4. Seal air leaks: Check around windows and doors to make sure there are no air leaks. Visually inspect ductwork in the attic or in the crawl space under your home. You can also have an HVAC comfort specialist come out and perform a duct blast test to determine percentage of air loss through your ductwork.

5. Check batteries and bulbs: Spring is a great time to make sure that the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are fresh. Stock up on batteries for flashlights and radios to prepare for summertime storms and hurricanes.
