Summer starts this weekend for us in eastern North Carolina! We’re all excited for the beach trips, cookouts, and family vacations but with summer comes high temperatures and humidity. One of the most common complaints we hear is how systems are running constantly. Here are a few reasons why your AC may be having this issue.

Its HOT outside!
The current North Carolina Mechanical code states that systems should be designed to maintain 75° indoors at 91° outside. As temperatures rise outdoors to over 90°, it will be harder and harder for your system to maintain even 75° inside. While some HVAC systems can often provide better than expected results at times, it is very likely that a lower indoor temperature setting will result in extremely long run times and may not even be able to satisfy the thermostat while running continuously.

Improper thermostat settings.
Make sure that the fan is set to “auto” and not “on.” If your fan is set to “on,” it will continuously blow air but the outdoor unit will not run. Leaving the fan turned on will actually bring warm air and humidity into your home, which you definitely DO NOT want!

Dirty air filters.
You know I couldn’t write a blog without mentioning air filters. Its just because they are so important to the functioning of your system. AC systems with clean filters work better and more efficiently. Be sure to at least check them every 30 days and replace when needed!

System malfunction.
There are multiple parts on your HVAC system that can go bad or maybe just need some routine maintenance. Things like dirty coils, low refrigerant levels, or malfunctioning motors, to name a few, can all cause your system to run continuously. In these instances, it’s time to call in a professional.

The best way to avoid costly repairs, improve heat pump efficiency, and reduce your chances of an untimely breakdown is to invest in preventative maintenance on your HVAC system. We offer preventative maintenance plans that include two performance tune-ups per year along with discounts and priority service. Don’t hesistate to call our office with any questions you may have about your system.
